High Voltage Lab

Our High Voltage Lab (HSL) is all about one thing: quality. We ensure that every transformer meets the highest standards. After assembly, we thoroughly assess whether the product meets the requirements of Royal SMIT, the customer and the international standards in the transformer industry.

Our approach is precise and thoughtful. Every test is aimed at ensuring that our transformers not only work excellently, but are also reliable, safe and durable. This gives confidence not only to us, but more importantly to our customers.

What are we doing in the HSL?

The HSL represents the final station in the extensive manufacturing process of a transformer. Here we subject each product to a series of tests that are crucial. Because testing is complex, we work extremely carefully and pay attention to every detail. This is how we ensure that the transformer functions perfectly.

Our tests have a clear purpose: we check that the transformer performs reliably, meets all technical requirements, and is safe to use. Customers are even allowed to be present during these tests. It is our belief that transparency - showing how the transformer performs - creates trust.

High voltage in top quality.

What tests do we do?

Basic tests
Before high voltage testing can begin, the transformer undergoes a number of basic tests. These include resistance and transfer ratio measurements, which we use to check the basic functionality of the device.

Loss tests
Even the most efficient transformers lose a small portion of their energy. Because these losses impose costs on grid operators, we prove that our transformers stay within promised customer warranties.

Thermal testing
The energy losses in a transformer are converted into heat. In the HSL, we test that the transformer does not get hotter than what we guarantee to our customers. This is how we ensure optimal performance and a long service life.

Insulation tests
Transformers work with high voltages and strong electric fields, which calls for top-quality insulation. We simulate situations such as lightning strikes and test whether the insulation can withstand the most extreme conditions.

Why the HSL?
